Reality Check

Parents Spent 8 Lakhs, I Earn 12K: The Mathematics of Failure

6 min readDecember 22, 2024

Dad sold his bike. Mom sold her jewelry. 8 lakhs for my B.Tech. Today I make 12,000 per month at a BPO. At this rate, I'll repay their investment in 67 years. Welcome to India's education scam.

The money they spent

Let me show you the receipts. Real numbers from my real life:

  • *Tuition fees: 5.6 lakhs (1.4 lakh per year)
  • *Hostel fees: 1.6 lakhs (40k per year)
  • *Books, laptop, supplies: 60,000
  • *Coaching for placements: 20,000
  • *Total damage: 8+ lakhs

This doesn't include the hidden costs. Travel. Food. Medical. The dreams they buried. The retirement fund they emptied.

Where the money came from

My dad is a government employee. 35,000 per month. Mom is a housewife. Here's how they arranged 8 lakhs:

Education loan: 4 lakhs at 11% interest. EMI: 8,500 for 7 years.

Mom's jewelry: 2 lakhs. Twenty years of gold, melted for my future.

Dad's PF withdrawal: 1.5 lakhs. His safety net, gone.

Selling the bike, borrowing from relatives: 50,000.

Every rupee had a story. Every payment had pain behind it.

They said "Beta, tension mat lo. Placement ho jayegi." Four years later, I can't even pay the education loan EMI with my salary.

What I earn vs what they expected

Expected package after B.Tech: 4-6 LPA (what colleges advertised)

Reality: 12,000 per month at a BPO. 1.44 LPA if I'm lucky.

My semester fees were 35,000. My monthly salary is 12,000. I earn in 3 months what they paid for 1 month of my education.

The math is simple. The pain is complex.

My monthly budget of shame

  • *Salary: 12,000
  • *Room rent (sharing): 3,500
  • *Food: 3,000
  • *Transport: 1,500
  • *Phone/Internet: 500
  • *Sending home: 2,000 (they need it for loan EMI)
  • *Left for everything else: 1,500

Clothes? Once a year. Movies? What movies? Savings? That's a joke, right?

My friends who didn't study engineering

Rahul: Learned welding after 12th. Makes 18,000. Zero debt.

Amit: Joined his dad's shop. Makes 25,000. Owns a bike.

Suresh: Government clerk through 12th pass quota. 28,000 + job security.

Me: B.Tech computer science. 12,000. 4 lakhs education loan pending. Still paying for the privilege of being "educated."

"Sharma ji ka beta..."

Every family gathering is torture. "How much package?" they ask. Dad lies. Says I'm "in IT." Doesn't mention it's BPO. Doesn't mention the night shifts. Doesn't mention I'm basically a glorified customer service rep.

Mom stopped attending kitty parties. Can't answer "What is your son doing?" without crying.

Sister's marriage is approaching. Dad needs 5 lakhs. I can contribute 20,000 if I skip meals for 3 months.

Return on Investment: Negative forever

Investment: 8 lakhs + 4 years of my life + parents' dreams

Return: 12,000 per month - expenses = 2,000 savings (on good months)

Time to recover investment: 8,00,000 / 2,000 = 400 months = 33 years

But wait, there's interest on the loan. Inflation. Medical emergencies. Marriage. Kids. The math says I'll die in debt.

Living with the weight

Every time Dad's back hurts, I remember he's 52 and should be planning retirement, not paying my education loan.

Every time Mom wears her old saree, I remember her gold is gone. Converted to my useless degree.

They don't blame me. That makes it worse. They still believe "something good will happen." They don't understand the market has already decided my worth: 12,000 rupees.

To parents considering engineering for their kids: That 8 lakhs? Put it in fixed deposit. In 4 years, it'll become 11 lakhs. Your kid working any regular job will earn more than what engineering offers today. Save your money. Save your kid. Save yourself from this scam.
